What are Elevator Traffic Analytics?

August 20, 2025

Did you know that you can design an elevator that meets the high-capacity of foot-traffic with help from elevator traffic analytics?

Elevator Traffic Analysis Explained

Elevator traffic analysis is the systematic study that evaluates how many people are expected to use an elevator at any given time. It takes into account different factors like:

  • Number of floors
  • Use of stairs or an escalator
  • Size and layout of the building
  • Primary uses of the building
  • Specific floors with anticipated traffic
  • How much traffic is expected

How it Helps in the Design Process

Before an elevator can be installed, a traffic analysis is needed. This ensures that elevators are designed to accommodate peak travel levels effectively. An analysis can help create an elevator that is a manageable size for the intended use, from high traffic to low traffic.

How it works

Elevator traffic analysis is performed during a five-minute peak period, measuring characteristics like quality of service and the quantity of service.

Quality of Service: Includes the number of car departures within a five-minute peak period.

Quantity of Service: Includes the number of visitors the elevator serves within the five-minute peak period. This is calculated by multiplying the number of car departures within five minutes by the number of passengers in the car.

Oftentimes, these measures are influenced by the number of people in the building, the number of elevator cars, predominant traffic flow, elevator control system, number of floors served, and entrance and exit floors.

Common Questions that come with Traffic Analysis

During the analysis process, a building owner and technician might question the best course of action when measuring traffic. Is it more beneficial to monitor one-way traffic or two-way traffic? This always depends on the type of building you have and who you are serving. For a car park, for example, you might only need one-way traffic. However, in a hospital setting, it would be more beneficial to measure two-way traffic as people travel throughout the facility.

What are the Benefits of Elevator Traffic Analysis?

When implementing traffic analysis before installing an elevator, you are helping your elevator with the following maintenance protocols.

  • Optimized elevator performance
  • Improved user experience
  • Better planning for user design
  • Energy efficiency
  • Increased building value
  • Enhanced safety
  • Custom scheduling

Elevator traffic analysis can make or break your elevator design, determining whether you will need a bigger space to fit foot traffic or a moderate-sized space. At Buckley Elevator, we perform regular site assessments to help with this process. Contact us for a free consultation.
