Signs It’s Time to Update Your Elevator

November 12, 2025

Elevators, like most technology, need to be updated at regular intervals. And like other pieces of technology, there are usually signs when modernizations are required, such as continual repairs, jerky movements, and slow arrival of passenger cars. These are a few of the indicators that it may be time for an update.

In past blogs, we have discussed the emergency signs that an elevator may need modernization. Today, we will expand on that and examine a wide range of indicators that could signal it’s time to consult with our team at Buckley Elevator to modernize your elevator technology.

How Old Is Your Elevator?

According to most professional elevator companies, elevators have a lifespan of 20-25 years, depending on many factors such as usage, maintenance frequency, environmental conditions, the specific type of elevator, and the availability of parts. Some elevators that have been maintained regularly have a longer lifespan, while those that have not been proactively maintained may experience a shorter lifespan.

If your elevator is nearing the end of its lifespan, you may want to consider upgrades that can extend its operational life, making it a safer and more enjoyable experience for passengers.

Is the Elevator Having Performance Issues?

As elevators age, they begin to have performance issues. This may include poor ride quality, possibly punctuated by jerky movements, slow door opening and closing, or wear-and-tear noises, such as grinding, squeaking, or rattling. A significant warning sign that closer attention is needed to the elevator includes a string of breakdowns that require repairs or repeated issues with the same equipment.

All of these signs could indicate that the elevator needs repairs or potentially modernizations.

Is the Elevator Technology Appearing or Acting Outdated?

The evolution of technology has occurred at a breakneck speed in recent years, with newer and more advanced devices being invented constantly. If the technology in your elevator system appears outdated or damaged, consider upgrading it.

Technology, including control panels, emergency lights, emergency two-way communication devices or dated aesthetics, may be signs that your elevator needs an update for both functionality and safety.

As a side note, if your elevator repair team is having trouble finding replacement parts or the elevator is consuming more energy because the parts are not energy-efficient, these may also be signs that modernization is necessary.

Knowing when to modernize your elevator can be a challenge. Outdated features, ride quality and constant repairs or breakdowns are indicators that it may be time to consult with a professional elevator team like ours at Buckley Elevator. We can evaluate the system to identify areas where modernizations could enhance ride quality and safety. Please contact our team at Buckley for more information.
